I love so much of what this series chooses to be, even now, when so few of our core players are in place. Sena may be the main character, but in a lot of ways Eyeshield 21 is more Hiruma's story. He sends Cerberus to drag Sena to the game, only to be visibly surprised when it turns out Sena was already on his way. And at the beginning of the Ojo the same thing happens. And he puts the blackmail book away, because that support surprised him.

when she tells him what she's not going to try to get him kicked off the team over what she's saying. At the beginning, Mamori calls him out, and he's juuuust about to use his go-to blackmail plan.

But this second volume gives us a couple instances showing there's a lot more to Hiruma than was initially shown. In the first volume he was domineering and cruel, using whatever he needed to to get what he wants. We especially get to know a few members - Shin, who's looking for a true challenge Sakuraba, who's not sure WHAT he's looking for Otawaro, the dumb-as-bricks lineman who loves the game and his team and Takami, the quarterback who tries to keep an even head amid them all.īut more than that, it's nice to see Hiruma start to show glimpses of the depth that makes him the most popular character in the series by far. And I like that the book takes the time to show them as people, not just football players. I bring all this up because in volume 2 we meet the Ojo White Knights - another football team and one of the targets our Devil Bats are specifically aiming for. when everyone in the series is striving for the same goal, it makes things a little more interesting when you see the opponents as rounded people in their own regard.

And while the interactions within the main team of a series like this carries a lot of weight, equally important are the opponents they go up against.
